"Come on, Sissy!" Scorchegg yelled after his sister. "Wait for me!"

Cinderegg rolled her eyes as she ran along the bottom of the volcano's outside. The inside of the volcano served as her home. FireTribe, her Tribe, lived in this dormant mountain. Cinderegg skidded to a stop at the bottom, pausing to let her brother catch up.

Breathless, he gasped out, "Why'd we stop here?"

"I want to ask Bloodfang something," Cinderegg replied simply. "Mom said that we could go around and meet the others. You know, acquaint ourselves with the guardians. Dad told me Bloodfang was on sentry duty today so he'd be outside the volcano."

"Huh? When did you talk to Dad?"

Cinderegg sighed. "You were there, Scorchegg. You just weren't listening, as usual."

Scorchegg gave her an annoyed look. "I'm a great listener!"

"Never mind," she shook her head slightly. "Let's just go and –"

"You wanted to ask me something?" Bloodfang hissed, suddenly popping up behind the two young dragons.

"Ah, umm… Yes…" Cinderegg stared at the far larger FireTriber. She knew that most 'eggs didn't get bigger until they were 'claws but Bloodfang was perhaps the largest dragon alive.

"Well, what is it?" Bloodfang snarled at her, his annoyance spiking.

"I – I mean, we," Cinderegg whipped her tail towards Scorchegg. "Wanted to know how you got your scars."

"I have many scars," the guardian growled. "All having been given to me in terms of battle… yet… this one," he pointed at the x-shaped scar crossing his face. "Has a bigger story."

There was a long silence between the guardian and 'eggs before Scorchegg finally blurted out, "Are you going to tell us, then?"

Bloodfang gave him a scathing look as he murmured, "Fine…" he stood straighter as he then continued in a gravelly voice, "It was a long time ago, during the time of Fevermoon's reign. I was just an 'egg at that time. You see, Fevermoon had just changed the naming system so I was no longer 'Egg of Blood'. It's a good thing too, that name didn't sound very inviting.

"But anyways, during Fevermoon's leadership and far before him all the way to Firemoon herself, there weren't just dragons in the Tribe. There were creatures called phoenixes also living in the volcano. The fire-birds, as we called them, lived in peace with us for a long time. That is, before the misunderstanding that caused them to be banished and hunted by us for years to come.

"The leader of the phoenixes, Phosphorus, and two of his own warriors, Neon and Sulfur, were coming into the volcano. I was out exploring the camp, having just learned to fly, when I saw something plummeting towards me. It was Phosphorus. His claws raked across my face, giving me the X marking you see on me today. Fevermoon was furious at the fire-birds. Having decided that the phoenixes were plotting to overthrow FireTribe, he banished them.

"All of the phoenixes left the volcano that day. A day after their banishment, Fevermoon declared that the FireTribers would hunt down the fire-birds, wiping them off the face of the world. He was worried that the phoenixes would come back and destroy the Tribe. And so, the FireTribe guardians all went out in search of the fire-birds. Eventually, all the phoenixes were killed and no longer threaten us…"

"So they're all gone?" Cinderegg wondered aloud.

"Yes," Bloodfang nodded.

"Wait," she held up a claw as a thought struck her. "You said that a misunderstanding caused them to be banished. What did you mean by that? It didn't seem like anything was misunderstood."

The guardian smiled at Cinderegg. "Aren't you the clever one? Indeed, there was something I left out. Now, when Phosphorus claws scratched me, it wasn't forceful. Unbeknownst to Fevermoon, I knew that the fire-bird leader didn't attack me on purpose. Phosphorus fell from the top of the volcano by accident and he didn't have enough time to fly up before he hit me."

"What?!" Scorchegg exclaimed. "So, you didn't do anything to stop the phoenixes from being banished, yet alone, hunted?!"

Bloodfang gave a savage grin. "The phoenixes held FireTribe back. The volcano wasn't big enough for two species and it never will be. I thought it was best for the fire-birds to leave and was thrilled when I convinced Fevermoon to hunt them. Yes, it was me who caused their downfall and I don't regret it."

"You can't do something like that!" Cinderegg snapped.

"Silly she-dragon, I already have!" Bloodfang hissed, pressing his snout closer to hers.

"Why tell us the truth?" Scorchegg cut in. "Now we know what really happened."

"I told you because it doesn't even matter now! The phoenixes are extinct and FireTribe is thriving. I did something that helped the Tribe flourish and you are going to condemn me for that?! No, I don't think so."

Cinderegg stared defiantly at the guardian. "That is true, Bloodfang. Just know that indeed you did assist the Tribe but you also hurt it. One day, you'll regret your choice."

Scorchegg gave his sister a confused glance as she spun around and began to climb back up the volcano's rocky turf. He followed slowly after her in silence, shooting a look over his shoulder at Bloodfang. The guardian was staring after Cinderegg, an expression of worry and rage on his face.

"What's that about?" Scorchegg thought. "Why would he be worried?"

Cinderegg and her brother both came up onto the edge of the volcano's rim. Scarletwing, their mother, who had been waiting for them, looked up to see them and smiled. She got to her claws and swopped her wings around her children as she cooed, "Did you meet the other guardians, darlings?"

Scorchegg replied, "Well, we met –"

"All of them, yes," Cinderegg interrupted, glaring at her brother.

"Wonderful," Scarletwing purred.

"Not exactly," Cinderegg muttered quietly so her mother didn't hear her. Then, squeezing out of Scarletwing's grasp, she stared down into the volcano, watching her Tribemates flying around inside. Cinderegg closed her eyes, imagining there were dragons and phoenixes flying outside the dens.
Short story number 22 (write a story about a misunderstanding) Okay so yeah I'm skipping around the stories doing ones I have ideas for ^^; This is one of the short stories going on with the Guardians account (~Guardian-Dragons) that me and my sis are co-writing. Now, just to tell you, this happened to the main character Cinderegg before the Guardians: Spreading Flames story began, about a month before... Hmm, I wonder if this is important :ninjaplot:
